pop's overview april 2011

its been a month since the flood at pops cabin. phase one, tearout and assessment of damage has been done. linda has made multiple trips to the cabin to meet with insurance people and contractors, as well as to participate in clean up and boxing up valuables for safekeeping. insurance details have not been solidified. the original insurance contact person is no longer employed by the company so a new agent has been assigned. he is not yet up to speed so to speak so phase 2, the repair is not scheduled yet. linda has decided on a contractor to do the repairs and she is happy with them thus far. she has started considering all the choices that need to be made- carpet, paint, counters, etc.

the timeline for starting work and repairs is unknown ,as is the duration of the project. based on my limited construction/remodel experience i would say it is likely to be a 4 to 6 month project.

yesterday was my first time up to see the damage. i'll be honest - it is terrible. devastating is the best description i can render. the sheet amount of damage is hard to comprehend. essentially the only spaces untouched are the stairwells and mikes office. every single room needs something, some rooms will be have to be completely rebuilt, others will not need much in comparison- but nearly all will need some major refurbishing. i found myself walking from room to room looking for something, anything, that i could focus on that was anything like it had been or should be. to see a place that has held so many memories for me and my kids in such a state is really hard.

the chinese character for "crisis" is the same as the one for "opportunity" and the one positive that will come out of this aweful situation will be that pops will get a much needed facelift.
